TLBAA Members Clean Up After Hurricane

Gentz Cattle Company

Submitted by: Carol Gentz

We survived Hurricane Ike. We lost the same barn we rebuilt after Rita and the roof on our show barn. Other than the barns, our main loss was our trees. Our cattle are fine. In fact Jimmy went to check on them early morning after the storm while the wind was still really bad and he said the cattle were grazing like nothing was going on.

James and Carol Gentz’ damaged barn.

James Gentz looks at damage following Hurricane Ike.

Some repairmen working on getting our electricity back on were from West Virginia. They were taking pictures of our Longhorns and James invited them to come and get on our riding steer. I think we ended up putting several crews on the steer before they left town. Something to remember from their trip to Texas!

Rocking G Ranch

Submitted by: Carolyn Hunter

Dayami and Ramie Griffin of Rocking G Ranch at Beaumont, TX, finally were able to get in touch. They were without electricity for about 16 days and their cell phone service is erratic. The family stayed at the ranch during the hurricane and suffered the loss of four barns including their hay barn. Ramie says there is a tree down on every fence, and two holes in the roof of their house where limbs fell, but the cattle are okay. He says it will definitely take awhile to recover and before things are back to normal.

As far as the Griffins had heard, Longhorn breeders in the area were all alright, including Shannon Larson and family at Beaumont.

Hurricane Relief

View a list of volunteers and those in need.

The TLBAA wishes to thank ITLA President Larry Smith II for contacting Executive Vice Chairman Charlie Buenger to propose the ITLA and TLBAA work together in a humanitarian effort to assist those in need from the recent hurricanes to hit the Gulf Coast.

Charlie Buenger contacted TLBAA Chairman Dr. Fritz Moeller with Mr. Smith's request, and Dr. Moeller was in agreement with Mr. Smith's proposal.

Below is Mr. Smith's message to the ITLA membership:

Hello ITLA Members,
As I am sure most of you are aware, portions of Texas has been affected severely from Hurricane Ike. Along with great devastation to many people, the livestock industry has also been affected.
Mr. Charlie Buenger, Executive Vice President of the TLBAA, and I have communicated concerning the events of Hurricane Ike. We have agreed that our respective offices will exchange names, and make public any Longhorn cattle or Longhorn Breeders that we become knowledgeable of who are in need of assistance.
Thank you,
Larry Smith II
President, ITLA

If you are a member of either organization and require any assistance, we are here to help. Call the association's office and leave your name, address and phone number(s) and how we can best assist you.

The TLBAA and ITLA stand united in our effort to assist our members in need.

TLBAA Chairman and Members on Local Television Station

Submitted by: Rebecca Moeller

At the New Mexico State Fair, a reporter from KOAT –TV, which broadcasts statewide, interviewed Gary Cole, Mountains & Plains affiliate president and TLBAA chairman Dr. Fritz Moeller during the Texas Longhorn show. The reporter was interested in the economy and the expense of travel and showing animals. Gary stated that some small breeders simply can’t afford to show while others like himself can’t afford not to. Fritz told the reporter that in spite of the economy, the Longhorns were still the largest and best-attended breed of the livestock shows at this year’s fair.

Legendary Longhorns, LLC Formed

Submitted by: Marijo Balmer

Legendary Longhorns, LLC, amazed the huge crowds in Albuquerque during the month of September.  This newly-formed group has taken the concept of Longhorn steer training to new levels and has exceeded expectations with these amazing riding, performing Longhorns.  In May 2008, a small group of dedicated friends decided they enjoyed working and training Longhorns so much that it was time to introduce these stunningly beautiful and intelligent animals to the public.  Some members of the group had been working with Longhorns for years and were well aware of the capabilities of these wonderful animals, while others were proficient in riding horses and mules.  It didn't take long for these "cowboys" to be overwhelmingly impressed when introduced to the intelligence and gentleness of Longhorns.

TLBT Holding Stuffed Animal Drive

TLBT officers are asking that you bring more than just your show animals to the State Fair of Texas Show on Oct. 19, 2008.

They are holding their first Stuffed Animal Drive and will be collecting new stuffed animals during the course of the three-day show. TLBT officers and members will then deliver the animals to the Children’s Hospital in Dallas.

More drives will be held at shows through-out the year and donations will be delivered to a children’s hospital in the area.

“By delivering stuffed animals to patients, we hope to bring a few minutes to their day when they can forget their worries,” said Becca Vizza, TLBT President.

So, when loading up your trailer for the show, don’t forget to load up a couple of soft and cuddly animals, as well. For more information, contact Becca Vizza at cowgirlvizza@aol.com.

Weekly Texas Hay Report

Compared to last week: Hay prices mostly steady and many report market stabilizing somewhat. Demand and trade activity light to moderate. Hay held in firm hands in many instances as growers are reluctant to sell in hopes of higher prices later in the fall and winter. Many areas have received moisture and trade has slowed with greening of pastures and no need for supplemental feeding. Those areas along the southeastern coast continue to be plagued with major problems resulting from the damage by Hurricane Ike. Many people have donated hay for livestock stranded with no feed or fresh drinking water. Many cattle have been reported killed due to the storm and thousands have been reported as stranded in flood areas. From the Ag News Team from Texas A&M "AgriLife Extension and other government and industry groups have teamed up to provide relief to ranchers in the area with Operation No Fences: Hurricane Ike Horse and Cattle Relief. Those who wish to make money donations to the operation may call 979-845-2604. For hay, feed, fencing or trucking donations call the Texas Department of Agriculture at 800-835-5832".

The State of Texas Department of Agriculture has the Hay and Grazing Hotline set up for buyers and sellers. The number is 1-877-429-1998. The Web site for TDA is www.agr.state.tx.us. For a hay report from a state other than Texas, click here.
