San Antonio Stock Show

Submitted by Suzanne Perry

San Antonio - Are You Ready For Some Horns?

You Bet! Because “stock-show time” means it’s all about big hats, fancy boots, and those big-horned Texas Longhorn cattle.

San Antonio Stock show

The South Texas Longhorn Association (STLA) in conjunction with the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo Association will bring you the annual Longhorn Show at the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo this Saturday, February 6, 2010.

The fun starts at approximately 9:00 A.M. on Saturday with a TLBAA World-Qualifying Youth Show featuring youngsters from pee-wee age up to high-school seniors exhibiting haltered Texas Longhorn young heifers on up to mature-age females, then the young bulls competition, and young steers, followed by the popular Showmanship competition where the youth exhibitors are judged on their showmanship talents and expertise rather than the judge studying the animal they are holding on lead.

The Youth show is followed by the exciting Non-Haltered Show, or “Freedom” Show where Texas Longhorn cattle of varying ages from young females, to grand dams, and finally those incredible big-horned trophy steers are judged as they walk (and many times run) freely in the show ring. The San Antonio Show has become highly respected over the last several years as one of the top venues for showcasing the finest of the trophy steers competition each year.

The Trophy Steers portion of the show attracts fair & rodeo spectators who stand 4-and-5-people deep along the arena rails to catch a glimpse or a few snapshots of the magnificent steers! STLA is always proud to bring some of the most well-known and outstanding steers in the Longhorn industry to San Antonio. Horn spread measurements on some of these big guys can hit over 100”+ tip-to-tip.

If you are new to the Longhorn world and want to learn more about exhibiting Texas Longhorn cattle plus give your kids a chance to learn what youth showmanship is all about, here’s the place to watch and learn. And make sure your camera battery is charged and ready, because San Antonio is the place to see the biggest and best of the grand dams and big-horned steers, including four-time TLBAA World Grand Champion Trophy Steer, WOW KCC, owned by Kimble Cattle Company in Karnes City, Texas.

The STLA is the oldest affiliate of the Texas Longhorn Breeders Association of America and sponsors youth and open Longhorn shows at the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo each year, plus at Austin (the Star of Texas Fair & Rodeo), and at Rockdale and Wharton.

Texas Longhorn cattle have long been the icons of Texas history – and what better place than the home of the historic Alamo, would you look to see some of the best longhorn cattle on display. STLA San Antonio Show Co-Chairs, Annie Morgan and Doug Muenchow, invite you to be there for the fun!

Please visit www.sarodeo.com for full details and maps on the SA Stock Show & Rodeo location and nearby parking. The Longhorn Show will be held in the Cattle Barn 2 Arena on the fair & rodeo grounds (this building is just east of the AT&T Center).

Weekly Texas Hay Report

Compared to last week: Hay prices steady. Trade and demand moderate to good. A majority of the state is providing supplemental feed to livestock. Hay and forage inventories remain low in the areas of the state that that experienced drought conditions this past summer and were unable to harvest adequate hay tonnage to meet demand.

To help meet the demand, supplies continue to be shipped into these areas of the state and have caused higher prices. The Panhandle and West Texas regions experienced increased movement as livestock producers planned for a late week winter storm. Though demand picked up in these areas hay prices remained mostly steady. Horse and Dairy quality hay remains hard to find with firm prices. Prices for hay and pellets quoted per ton except where noted.

The State of Texas Department of Agriculture has the Hay and Grazing Hotline set up for buyers and sellers. The number is 1-877-429-1998. The Web site for TDA is www.agr.state.tx.us. For a hay report from a state other than Texas, click here.
