Weekly Texas Hay Report

Compared to last week: Hay prices generally steady. Storms from Hurricane Alex continued to produce rain throughout the state this past week causing trade and demand to be light with very slow movement. The precipitation was needed for parts of Central and East Texas that were previously reporting drought conditions and low hay supplies. Flooding did occur in some locations as up to 12 inches fell in some areas.

Though some crops were damaged, hay fields and pasture conditions were generally improved. Some hay was damaged by the rain, but the outlook for future cuttings improved substantially. Yields are expected to increase thanks to the moisture; however, a larger volume of lower quality hay is anticipated as 2nd cutting was delayed in areas.

A large amount of wheat hay continues to be available on the market, affecting the demand for alfalfa in regions. Livestock remain in good condition throughout the state with minimal supplemental feeding being reported. Prices for hay and pellets quoted per ton except where noted.

The State of Texas Department of Agriculture has the Hay and Grazing Hotline set up for buyers and sellers. The number is 1-877-429-1998. The Web site for TDA is www.agr.state.tx.us. For a hay report from a state other than Texas, click here.
