Steven Zunker Elected Chairman of the Board

During a Board of Directors' phone conference on August 16, 2010, Region 12 Director Steven Zunker, Luling, TX, was elected by a majority of the seated Board of Directors to serve as TLBAA Chairman of the Board. Mr. Zunker will complete the remainder of the term left vacant by Robert Richey. Mr. Richey gave his notice of resignation last week during a Board of Directors' phone conference.
Mr. Richey will continue to serve as Region 9 Director. "I will strive to do my best by always basing decisions on what is best for the breed, the people, and the Association," Zunker said.

Rombeck Organizes Relay for Life Longhorn Team

Becky Rombeck gets psyched up for her walk.

Becky Rombeck, JBR Longhorns, Home, KS,  recently organized a team for ACS and her local Marshall Co. Relay for Life. Her team is named “Grab Life by the Horns” in honor or memory of those in the Longhorn industry.

Becky, a cancer survivor herself, has been an inspiration to many Longhorn breeders who have undertaken treatment for cancer or know someone affected by it. She received a number of donations from TLBAA members and vowed that the team would walk five miles for every $100 raised.

There were 11 persons on the "Grab Life by the Horns" team, including five Rombecks. By walking the night of August 7, the team raised approximately $1600.

Joe and Stephanie Sedlacek, Lazy J Longhorns, , KS, have donated two embryo lots -- Wyoming Warpaint X Trendsetter (J.R. Grand Slam daughter) -- to Longhorn Opportunities' Heart of America Texas Longhorn
Sale on August 28, 2010, in Marysville, KS. The proceeds of these two lots will go to the "Grab Life by the Horns" team.

"What a perfect way to start next year's donations off," says Becky. "The money will go towards our 2011 relay." Marshall County has one of the highest rates of cancer in Kansas.

Becky adds, "If anyone wants to donate for next year.
I can start turning it in in September. Any amount is appreciated in order to help find a cure for this disease."
The "Grab Life by the Horns" team was a part of the recent Marshall Co. Relay for Life.

We rode in the Illinois State Fair Parade. Even made the Channel 55 News!

Deanna Sanders, of River Bottom Longhorns, Bingham, Illinois, rode Sancho (owned/trained by Martha Morehart from Ohio) through the Illinois State Fair Parade on Thursday August 12th. Sancho was a big hit in the parade and everyone was amazed to see someone riding a Longhorn. I had fun riding him and he is very well behaved.

After the parade Sancho remained on display during the whole week of the Illinois State Fair for anyone wanting to get their picture taken with him.

Weekly Texas Hay Report

Market News

AM_GR310
Amarillo, TX Fri Aug 20 2010 USDA-TX Dept of Ag Market News

Weekly Texas Hay Report

Compared to last week: Hay prices generally steady. Hot day time temperatures have resulted in mostly light movement. The Panhandle and West Texas regions received isolated thunderstorms last week that helped improve range conditions. High quality horse and dairy type alfalfa remains in short supply with good demand. There is a large volume of rain damaged alfalfa on the market; however the abundance has made for light demand. In East Texas drought conditions have caused for moderate to good demand for Coastal Bermuda.
Producers in this area are beginning to supplement livestock as forage availability in pastures is becoming limited. In South Texas, good pasture conditions coupled with adequate hay inventories has caused demand to be light.
Grasshopper and Armyworm populations continue to increase and cause problems for hay producers. Prices for hay and pellets quoted per ton except where noted.

The state of Texas Department of Agriculture has the Hay and Grazing Hot Line set up for buyers and sellers; the number is 1-877-429-1998. The web site for TDA is www.tda.state.tx.us.
