TLBAA Member Everard Johnson
of Port Republic, MD, was recently on the front page of the local newspaper The Recorder. He was interviewed exclusively about his Texas Longhorn herd.  To read more of the article click here http://www.somdnews.com/rec/cover/.  Thanks to TLBAA Region 2 Director Mark Stuck for alerting us to this story.

On November 18, 2010 R. J. Pickle, CPA after counting all of the eligible ballots and certifying that the results were accurate, presented confirmation of the 2011 Division B Board nominations for the TLBAA.

The results are as follows:

Region 7 Director
Donnie Taylor, Huntington, TX

Region 8
Bernard Lankford, Weatherford, TX

Region 9
Robert Richey, San Angelo, TX

Region 10
Darlene Aldridge, Somerville, TX
Gary Bowdoin, Crawford,TX
Jay Faske, Somerville, TX

Region 11
Larry Smith, Spring, TX

Region 12
Steven Zunker, Luling, TX

At Large Director
Brent Bolen, Lufkin, TX
Darlene Aldridge, Somerville, TX
Lana Hightower, Van, TX

The entire 2010 Board of Directors received notification of the nomination results from R. J. Pickle, CPA.  Each Nominee has been contacted by Chairman Steven Zunker and agreed to serve on the Board of Directors.

Darlene Aldridge was given the opportunity to choose between running for Region 10 Director or At Large Director; she informed Chairman Zunker that she would run for Region 10 Director.

Because there are three nominees for the Region 10 Director, active and lifetime members in Region 10 will be receiving an official ballot. The ballot will be mailed no later than November 30, 2010 and must be received by the CPA firm of R. J. Pickle by December 24, 2010 to be counted.

Because there are no opponents for Regions 7, 8, 9, 11, and 12 or for At Large, these nominations stand as elected Directors for Division B and will be installed during the General Membership Meeting on January 14, 2011 in Fort Worth, Texas. Congratulations to those Directors.

Jack Phillips Award: The Jack Phillips Award is named after former TLBAA President Jack Phillips who was a quiet, yet forceful presence in the TLBAA. The award honors individuals who have worked selflessly for the Longhorn and breeders alike, without recognition. – Affiliate Presidents to request nominations from their members. All members of the TLBAA are encouraged to send nominations. Nominations should be in written format with reasons on how/why the individual nominated fulfills the criteria of the award. All nominees are to be active TLBAA members, in good standing.

Mel Raley Rising Star: Mel Raley will always be remembered as a shining star for the TLBAA because of his ability to share his vast knowledge of the Longhorn breed with new members. This special recognition is awarded to those who have been a member for less than five years and through involvement and sustained enthusiasm have made a positive impact on their peers and on the Longhorn breed.

Dave Evans Breeder of the Year: Dave Evans was an enthusiastic breeder of Texas Longhorns, who served the TLBAA in many capacities. Before his untimely death, Evans had succeeded in breeding a herd of Texas Longhorns that were well recognized in the breed. In his honor, this award is given to individuals who have dedicated themselves to the betterment of the Texas Longhorn through their breeding program.

Elmer Parker Lifetime Achievement Award: Elmer Parker was a livestock handler and technician at the Wichita Wildlife Refuge in Oklahoma for many years and he played an important part in the history of the Longhorn breed. Austin, Texas, November 18, 2010 – The Star of Texas Fair and Rodeo (STFR) is proud to announce a call for entries for its Competitive Events programs.  December 1, 2010 marks the deadline for entries for the 2011 Junior Livestock Show and the 7th Youth Western Art Show.

As the foundation of the Fair and Rodeo, STFR’s Junior Livestock Show gives students from across the state the opportunity to showcase their talents and skills during the annual Fair and Rodeo.  Home to the 8th largest junior livestock show in the nation, Rodeo Austin encourages students to compete for the chance to achieve top honors and participate in the annual Youth Auction.  Registration is open to any Texas 4-H or FFA member age 9-18 and is available online at www.RodeoAustin.com.

To further enrich STFR’s youth outreach programs, Rodeo Austin invites all Texas high school students to participate in the 7th Rodeo Austin Youth Western Art Show.  Students from across the state (Grades 9-12) may enter their western-inspired artwork in the areas of illustrations and sculptures.  The top 20 pieces of artwork submitted will sell in the Youth Auction to be held on March 25, 2011 at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum.  The online submission deadline is December 1, 2010.  Visit www.RodeoAustin.com to register today!

Show Rules and Regulations

The TLBAA Board of Directors approved the Trails Cover Format policy during the October 16, 2010 Board of Directors Meeting. The policy will begin with the January 2011 cover.

POLICY ON Trails Cover Format
Approved October 16, 2010

Need For Policy/Discussion

The cover makes the first and most important impression to the reader and is the most valuable page of the magazine. Because the 2009 Board of Directors requested that the Trails sell covers to increase revenue, it is imperative that a policy on cover format be set in order to keep the best image of the Trails intact.

Policy Proposal

  • Photograph for the cover is vertical and is of the highest quality with a 300 dpi.
  • Trails logo shall not be altered to accomodate a photo, unless it enhances the image of the magazine.
  • Mailing label and bar code are two rectangular shapes beginning at the bottom left hand corner and continuing to the right side will not be moved to accomodate a photo due to mailing policies.
  • The Trails will accept no more than 5 separate photos (one photo is preferred).
  • No copy will be added to the cover to identify animals, events or other promotions unless it is a TLBAA official announcement.
  • All copy regarding the photo(s) on the cover will be placed on the Table of Contents page under the heading “About the Cover”.
  • At least a third of a page within the magazine will be available for the purchaser of the cover to continue with copy regarding the cover if space on “About the Cover” is lacking.
  • The editor in chief and the art director of the Trails will have final approval of covers.
  • By following these guidelines, the purchaser of the cover can be assured that the highest quality of production standards will be used to provide a professional result.
